Summary

Closes #1492.

Depends on #1495. Both change the response handling in src/providers/openai.ts, so this branch is stacked on it. Review only the last two commits (feat(status): … and docs: sync stats); the first commit is #1495 and drops out of the diff once that merges.

OpenAI-compatible replies carry a usage object, and OpenRouter includes the exact charge (usage.cost) in every reply by default. OpenAIProvider read only the message and dropped it, so the only way to see what background compression, summaries and consolidation cost was to diff the OpenRouter key's usage counter before and after a run.

The provider now hands usage to a small process-wide tally (src/providers/usage.ts), and status shows it:

"provider": {
  "llm": "llm",
  "usage": { "calls": 2, "promptTokens": 5000, "completionTokens": 150, "costUsd": 0.00042 },
  ...
}

The status page adds an "LLM usage since start" row (2 calls · 5,000 prompt + 150 completion tokens · $0.0004), shown once at least one reply reported usage. costUsd stays null for providers that report tokens but no cost. Replies without usage change nothing, and no request field is sent.

Checks

  • test/llm-usage.test.ts: totals across two replies, tokens without cost, reply without usage
  • test/status.test.ts: provider.usage in the report, page row text, row hidden before any call, null when not wired
  • npm run build, npm run skills:gen, npm run docs:sync, npm run skills:check
  • npm test: 2601 passed, 4 skipped
  • tsc --noEmit: no new diagnostics compared with main

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • The status page now displays LLM call counts, token usage, and reported cost when available.
  • Bug Fixes
    • OpenAI responses stopped by the token limit now show a clear error instead of continuing with partial reasoning.
  • Documentation
    • Updated project statistics across documentation in multiple languages to reflect 4,100+ passing tests and 255 source files.

…artial reasoning

When a reasoning model spends the whole max_tokens budget on reasoning, an
OpenAI-compatible API answers 200 with finish_reason "length", no content and
a partial reasoning field. The reasoning fallback returned that fragment as a
successful result, so compression stored chain-of-thought as the summary.

Throw a clear error for that case and keep the fallback for replies that
finished normally.

OpenAI-compatible replies carry a usage object, and OpenRouter includes the
exact charge (usage.cost) in every reply, but the provider read only the
message and dropped it. Keep process totals of calls, prompt tokens,
completion tokens and cost, and show them under provider.usage in
GET /agentmemory/status and on the status page. Replies without usage change
nothing, and no request field is added.

Walkthrough

OpenAI usage totals are accumulated and exposed in status reports. Empty responses that end at the token limit now raise an error before the reasoning fallback. Documentation updates the reported test and source-file counts.

Changes: LLM usage reporting and related updates

Layer / File(s) Summary
Provider usage collection
src/providers/usage.ts, src/providers/openai.ts, test/llm-usage.test.ts
OpenAI response usage is accumulated as call, token, and cost totals. Provider tests cover responses with and without usage data.
Status reporting
src/triggers/api.ts, src/functions/status.ts, test/status.test.ts
The status reporter passes accumulated usage into the status report. The HTML page displays formatted usage when calls exist, including token counts and reported or unreported cost.
Token-limit handling and validation
src/providers/openai.ts, test/fetch-timeout.test.ts, scripts/release-gate/summary-recovery.mjs
Responses with absent content and finish_reason: "length" raise a token-limit error. Tests cover fallback behavior, and the release-gate scenario checks summary and compression failures and exported data.
Documented project counts
AGENTS.md, README.md, READMEs/README.*.md, scripts/docs-sync.state.json
Test-count references change from 4,000+ to 4,100+. The docs-sync state also records 255 source files instead of 254.

Explanation

Issue [#1492] requires process-wide totals for calls, prompt tokens, completion tokens, and reported cost; status exposure under provider; no changes for replies without usage; and no added request fields. The changes add recordLlmUsage and getLlmUsage, record response usage in OpenAIProvider, pass totals to the status report, expose provider.usage, and render the usage row. test/llm-usage.test.ts and test/status.test.ts cover reported usage, missing cost, missing usage, and status output.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The whole pull request also changes truncated-response behavior. src/providers/openai.ts rejects empty finish_reason: "length" responses, test/fetch-timeout.test.ts tests this behavior, and scripts/release-gate/summary-recovery.mjs adds related recovery scenarios. These changes do not implement issue [#1492], which covers usage accounting and status reporting.

Resolution

Remove the truncated-response behavior and its tests from this pull request, or move them to the pull request for that separate requirement.

Resolve src/providers/openai.ts by keeping main's shared timeout and

…ged gate

Provider tests now cover a reply cut at max_tokens with null or empty content
and only reasoning or reasoning_content, through both compress and summarize;
replies that finished normally with reasoning only (the fallback stays); and
nonempty content, which is still returned even when finish_reason is
"length".

The packaged summary-recovery gate gains a truncated-reasoning-is-rejected
scenario. Its loopback model returns finish_reason "length", null content and
partial reasoning that parses as valid XML. Against the installed archive,
summarize returns success: false with the max_tokens error, the compression
is stored as failed (compression_failed), and the reasoning marker appears
nowhere in the export. With the provider change reverted, the scenario fails
because the partial reasoning is stored as the session summary.

Bring in current main through the updated rohitg00#1495 branch. Resolve
src/providers/openai.ts by taking main's try block (with the finish_reason
check) and re-adding the usage type and recordLlmUsage call inside it; keep
both imports in src/functions/status.ts. Commit what npm run docs:sync changes.

Brought up to date: merged the updated #1495 branch, which already contains current main. src/providers/openai.ts now uses main's try block (with the finish_reason check from #1495) and records usage inside it; src/functions/status.ts keeps both imports. Still depends on #1495: once that merges, this diff shrinks to the usage commits. Usage, status and provider tests pass (96).

🔴 OpenRouter usage never reaches status

With OPENROUTER_API_KEY, recordLlmUsage never runs for LLM replies. OpenRouterProvider parses replies separately, so status shows zero usage despite billed calls.

Learn more

OpenRouter is a separate provider selected by createBaseProvider. Its call reads the same type of chat-completion response but does not record usage. The new tally records only calls made through OpenAIProvider, so an OpenRouter-only deployment never reports tokens or charges.

Example: Configure OPENROUTER_API_KEY and run a compression that receives usage: { prompt_tokens: 100, completion_tokens: 20, cost: 0.001 }. The provider returns the answer, but status still reports zero calls and no cost.

Recommended fix: Record usage in OpenRouterProvider.call after parsing a successful response, ideally sharing the accounting helper with OpenAIProvider.call; test the actual OpenRouter configuration path.

🟡 Unpriced calls make total cost incomplete

When a reply omits cost after a priced reply, costUsd retains the earlier sum. Status then presents incomplete spending as the total since start.

Learn more

The status page treats a non-null costUsd as the reported cost for all tracked replies in describeLlmUsage. An OpenAI-compatible endpoint can report tokens without cost. If some replies have cost and others do not, retaining the priced subtotal makes the apparent total incomplete without any indication of missing charges.

Example: The first reply reports $0.01; the second reports 1,000 tokens but no cost. Status shows two calls and $0.0100 rather than indicating that the overall cost is unknown or partial.

Recommended fix: Track whether any counted reply lacked a numeric cost and expose that distinction in LlmUsageTotals; display the known subtotal as partial or mark total cost unknown.

Reject summary replies cut off at max_tokens.

When the reply has finish_reason "length" and nonempty content, the provider returns the partial text. parseSummaryXml accepts it once <title> and <narrative> are closed. Missing <decisions>, <files>, or <concepts> blocks become empty lists. The summary is then saved with coveredThrough set. Check finish_reason before returning nonempty content, and fail the summary request instead. Update test/fetch-timeout.test.ts to match, because it currently asserts that partial content is returned.

Add a reporter-level test for recorded LLM usage.

The usage tests call evaluateStatus with an llmUsage object. They never call createStatusReporter. If llmUsage: getLlmUsage() at src/triggers/api.ts:443 were removed or changed, these tests would still pass. No other test in test/ reads recorded usage through the reporter or the api::status endpoint.

A reporter-level test can record usage and read it back through the same wiring. Use the stub pattern from test/status-rebuild-overlap.test.ts. Reset the module-level totals before and after each test so state does not leak.

Mark partial cost totals when some recorded calls omit cost.

recordLlmUsage adds cost only for replies that report it. It still increments calls for every reply with usage. After a mix of cost-bearing and cost-free replies, costUsd holds the sum of only the cost-bearing calls. Status shows that subtotal as the total cost, with no partial marker. Track how many recorded calls reported cost. When some calls omit cost, report the total as partial or unavailable, and show that state in the status JSON and page.

Review comment at @src/providers/openai.ts at line 117:
Update recordLlmUsage to track how many usage-recorded calls include cost, then
use that count when presenting cost so totals from mixed cost-bearing and
cost-free calls are marked partial or unavailable. Show the same cost state in
the status JSON and page.

Record usage for the other provider implementations, or document the OpenAI-only scope.

recordLlmUsage runs only in OpenAIProvider.call. OpenRouterProvider, AnthropicProvider, MinimaxProvider, and AgentSDKProvider never record usage. Status reports these totals as process-wide LLM usage, so those configurations show no usage row.

Review comment at @src/providers/openai.ts at line 117:
Update OpenRouterProvider, AnthropicProvider, MinimaxProvider, and
AgentSDKProvider to call recordLlmUsage with each provider’s usage data,
matching the usage recording in OpenAIProvider.call so process-wide totals
include all supported providers.
