answers(postgres): the Vercel integration now sets DATABASE_URL_POOLED - #8670
Two Postgres troubleshooting pages, "Connection terminated unexpectedly" on Vercel functions and "DATABASE_URL is missing" on a deployed Next.js app, tell readers which connection strings the Prisma Postgres Vercel integration sets and which one their functions should read.
Changes
Both pages said the integration sets only the direct connection string and that you add the pooled one yourself. That has been stale since October 29, 2026, when the integration started setting DATABASE_URL_POOLED as well (docs: #8657).
/postgres/connection-terminated-unexpectedly
Step 2 note, step 4 table row and the "Where does Prisma Postgres fit?" section: the integration sets DATABASE_URL (direct) and DATABASE_URL_POOLED (pooled); POSTGRES_URL stays direct, and the limits bullet points migrations and admin tools at DATABASE_URL, because PRISMA_DATABASE_URL holds a different URL on some older databases.
The limits bullet now says to point functions at DATABASE_URL_POOLED, and keeps "add the pooled string yourself" only for a database created before October 29, 2026 that has no DATABASE_URL_POOLED.
CTA description: "point your functions at its pooled connection string" instead of "add its pooled connection string".
/postgres/database-url-missing, the list of names the integration sets now includes DATABASE_URL_POOLED. "On Vercel" bullet: the integration sets DATABASE_URL_POOLED next to DATABASE_URL; point the database client at it; if a database created before October 29, 2026 has no DATABASE_URL_POOLED, add the pooled string yourself first.
Same page: "If your project has no DATABASE_URL_POOLED, the database was created before the integration started setting it on October 29, 2026. Add it yourself"
Same page: "On some older databases, PRISMA_DATABASE_URL" holds a URL other than the direct string
Checks
apps/site: pnpm test 326 pass, 0 fail (includes the content and Markdown tests for these pages).
Repo root: pnpm test 65 pass, 0 fail.
No other page under apps/site/content or apps/blog/content says the integration leaves out the pooled string.
Updated Prisma Postgres and Vercel connection guidance to distinguish direct connection strings from pooled strings and identify the variables that contain them.
Clarified that the Vercel integration sets DATABASE_URL_POOLED for newer databases; older databases may need the variable added manually.
Noted that some older databases may use a different URL in PRISMA_DATABASE_URL.
Updated guidance to point application functions to the pooled connection variable to help stay within connection limits.
Two troubleshooting pages said the Prisma Postgres Vercel integration sets
only the direct connection string and that you add the pooled one yourself.
Since October 29, 2026 the integration also sets DATABASE_URL_POOLED, the
pooled string. The pages now say so, and keep "add it yourself" for
databases created before that date, as the Vercel guide does.

Walkthrough
Two Prisma Postgres support articles now describe the Vercel integration’s direct and pooled connection variables. They explain when some older databases may need a pooled variable added manually and update their revision dates.

The articles distinguish direct and pooled connection variables. They state that databases created before October 29, 2026 may need DATABASE_URL_POOLED added manually. One article notes that Neon’s integration puts the pooled string in DATABASE_URL and that some older databases may have a different URL in PRISMA_DATABASE_URL. Both update dates change to October 30, 2026.
The supplied changes clarify which connection URLs to use, with no identified issue requiring a fix before merge.

The Vercel connection page said PRISMA_DATABASE_URL always holds the direct
connection string. On some older databases it holds a different URL, as the
Vercel guide says, so a reader could pick it for migrations or admin tools.
The page now limits the direct-string claim to DATABASE_URL and POSTGRES_URL,
states the exception and points readers to DATABASE_URL.

…lacks it
The Vercel pages said flatly that the integration doesn't set
DATABASE_URL_POOLED on a database created before October 29, 2026. Rotating a
database's secrets sets the variable on any database, so that reader could be
told to add a variable the integration already manages. The pages now word
this as the Vercel guide does: add it if the project doesn't have it.
