Resolved #3341

🧭 Context

On the download charts (package page, compare page, ssr embed variant), missing download datapoint were also interpolated when using data correction knobs.
Also, adjacent datapoints were connected with dashed paths, which "suggests a certainty that simply doesn't exist" (quoting Fabian here^^).

📚 Description

Gaps are left visible, with rect overlays with a pattern, even with interpolated data.

Mode Screenshot
Dark mode image
Light mode image

Also impacted:

  • embed ssr chart, where the same overlays are applied
  • sparklines in the compare page, which now show gaps instead of the dashed connections.

📝 Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Improvements
    • Trend charts now preserve missing data points as visible gaps instead of displaying misleading zero values.
    • Download-chart gaps are highlighted with hatched areas for clearer interpretation.
    • Chart lines and areas now break cleanly across missing data.
    • Genuine zero values remain distinguishable from unavailable data.
    • Predictions and smoothing are applied only within continuous data ranges, improving chart accuracy.
    • Missing values at the end of download series are represented accurately, while valid zero values remain visible.
    • Missing chart values now display a clear “No data” label.

Trend data now preserves missing values through normalisation and processing. Browser charts and embedded SVG charts render those values as gaps, with patterned overlays on download charts.

Explanation

Issue #3341 requires download gaps to remain visible and not to appear as interpolated zeroes or dashed connections. applyDataPipeline preserves null positions and corrects each continuous run independently. buildNormalisedTrendsDataset retains missing values, while the chart config cuts null values and disables null dashes. getDownloadChartGaps creates bounded patterned overlays for missing intervals. The supplied tests cover pipeline gaps, gap overlays, null rendering, labels, tooltips, and SSR output. These changes address the package, comparison, sparkline, and SSR chart requirements.

Full details: Out of Scope Changes check

Explanation

The changed chart pipeline, shared gap utility, chart components, SSR renderer, chart-library dependency update, labels, tooltips, and tests directly support issue #3341. The dependency update supports the required chart-layer overlay placement. No unrelated behaviour is demonstrated by the supplied change evidence.

Separate null gaps from dashed estimates.

A null-only internal gap can enable the dashed “Estimation” legend on daily or weekly charts because hasDownloadAnomalies checks every null. The chart disables nullDashes and renders the gap with a hatch overlay, so this legend is incorrect.

Do not reduce the predicate to dashIndices only. A final null value for a large download series also triggers drawNoDataTail, which renders a real dashed tail. Keep that condition for the existing dashed legend, and use a separate condition or legend entry for hatched null gaps.

Judging from the screenshot the pattern is currently drawn on top of the nodes and edges. It should probably stay behind them instead?

Yeah it's injected inside the #svg slot, so on the last layer basically.
It would require to also inject circles on top, and have them transitioned nicely. Not sure it's worth it tbh...

@mootari best would be to patch the lib to have a #svg-underlayer slot. could be done later

🟡 Minor · Do not draw an estimation line to a missing final value. · TrendsChart.vue:1099-1101

app/components/Package/TrendsChart.vue:1099-1101
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Do not draw an estimation line to a missing final value.

When a small package has no value for the final comparison period, the new normalisation leaves that value as null. On an incomplete monthly or yearly period, drawEstimationLine still draws a dashed line and circle to the null plot’s zero-position coordinate. This makes a missing value look like an estimated zero. Skip the overlay when either endpoint is null. VueUiXy v3.27.1 assigns a zero-position y-coordinate to null plots. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

app/components/Package/TrendsChart.vue:1445-1449
🎯 Functional Correctness | 🟡 Minor | ⚡ Quick win

Show missing small-package values as missing.

When a small package has no value at a comparison timestamp, the series now retains null. The large-package check leaves isNoDataValue false, and the tooltip formats that null as zero. At a missing final timestamp, the end-label helper can also select the preceding value without a missing-value marker. Handle null separately from genuine zero for every download series; keep zero valid for small packages. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

server/utils/embed-downloads-svg.ts: 1

532-532: 🎯 Functional Correctness | 🔵 Trivial | 💤 Low value

Consider localising the embed’s missing-value label.

The embed applies locale to number and date formatting, but it passes an identity t function and the fixed missingValueLabel: 'No data'. The API does not require all chart messages to be translated, so the claim that the axis text is localised is not supported. However, non-English embeds can still show localised dates and numbers beside English missing-data text.

If full chart-message localisation is intended, resolve package.trends.no_data_short from the server locale catalogue before passing it to createLastDatapointLabelsSvg. This is an optional consistency improvement, not a contract violation.
