Description

Mautic 7.2.2 (mautic/mautic#17934) tightens the Twig sandbox for User-uploaded Theme templates. Templates can now call methods and read properties only on Mautic and Plugin objects. On those objects, only methods whose names start with get, is, or has are allowed, and a list of sensitive getters is blocked. A few Form template methods are exempt. The sandbox also blocks the less_compile filter again.

This PR updates Template sandbox restrictions in docs/themes/getting_started.rst to cover:

  • the method and property rules
  • the blocked getters
  • the Form template exceptions
  • the __toString exception for Twig\Markup objects
  • the less_compile filter
  • the SecurityNotAllowedMethodError and SecurityNotAllowedPropertyError exceptions, with a tip on formatting dates

The wording matches the 6.0 and 5.x suggestions for the same sandbox change (#855, #854).

Note: #714, also against 7.2, edits the same section. Whichever PR merges second needs a small rebase.

Review pass: Applied both CodeRabbit suggestions after checking them against ThemeSandboxPolicy.php. The accessor rule now describes the name-prefix check without calling the methods read-only, and the page notes that Twig\Markup objects still allow __toString.

Verification: I checked the text against ThemeSandboxPolicy.php at the PR head (2e1c0aa). Vale reports no new findings, and the edited section parses as valid RST.

Explanation

The description states the purpose and scope of the change: a documentation update to the Theme template sandbox restrictions in docs/themes/getting_started.rst, covering method and property rules, blocked getters, Form template exceptions, the __toString exception for Twig\Markup, the less_compile filter, the two sandbox exceptions, and a date-formatting tip. It also gives verification steps (checked against ThemeSandboxPolicy.php at head 2e1c0aa, Vale run, RST parse), notes a related PR (#714) that edits the same section, and links the related issue. It follows the template structure, but the template's 'Clearly describe... where reviewers should look... and how to test' guidance is only partly met, since the description does not give reviewers a precise file location or direct test steps beyond the author's own checks. The 'Linked issue' section uses 'Related to' rather than the required 'Closes #' keyword, which is acceptable for a related (not closing) reference. The Screenshots section is marked not applicable, which is correct for a docs change. The description is mostly complete.

- Line 252: Update the sandbox description to clarify that magic methods are
blocked except for `__toString()` on `Twig\Markup`, which the policy allows.

Thanks, I'll check each CodeRabbit suggestion on this PR against the Mautic codebase. I'll apply the ones that hold up and reply here with what changed and what didn't.

Both CodeRabbit suggestions are correct, and I've applied them to this PR.

  1. Prefix rule isn't a read-only guarantee. ThemeSandboxPolicy::checkMethodAllowed() checks only that the method exists and that its name starts with get, is, or has. It never checks for side effects. The page now says templates can call methods "whose names start with" those prefixes, and no longer calls them read-only. The {{ email.getSubject() }} example stays.
  2. Twig\Markup::__toString() exception. checkMethodAllowed() allows __toString on Twig\Markup objects before it rejects other names starting with __. A new bullet says __toString is blocked on Mautic and Plugin objects but allowed on Twig\Markup objects, which hold content captured in {% set %}...{% endset %} blocks. The magic-method example now names __call and __get instead.

The policy code is the same at the cited commit and at the current 7.2 head, and Vale reports nothing on the changed lines.
