marcterm is designed around my own usage and setup, so it might behave in unexpected ways on other setups.

📦 Installation

Debian / Ubuntu (Linux)

Download the .deb for your architecture from GitHub Releases, then install it:

sudo apt install ./marcterm_*-1_amd64.deb

The package installs the application, desktop launcher and icon. To update, download and install the newer package.

Release packages are built on Ubuntu 24.04 for amd64. Older distributions may require building from source.

⚙️ Configuration

marcterm reads its config from ~/.config/marcterm.toml.

Copy the bundled marcterm.demo.toml as a starting point:

cp marcterm.demo.toml ~/.config/marcterm.toml

🔨 Building from source

cargo build --release

The compiled binary will be at target/release/marcterm.

Build a Debian package

On Debian or Ubuntu, install dpkg-dev and the native build dependencies, then run:

cargo install cargo-deb --version 3.8.0 --locked
cargo deb

cargo-deb builds the release binary and creates a .deb in Cargo's target/debian directory using the metadata in Cargo.toml. The package includes /usr/share/applications/io.marc.term.desktop and its icon.

To package an existing native release build into a chosen directory:

mkdir -p dist
cargo deb --no-build --output ./dist/

Build on the oldest distribution you intend to support so the generated library dependencies remain compatible.
