net: can: rockchip: backport CAN-FD support for rk3576_can + TX queue wedge fix - #610
can: rockchip: backport CAN-FD support for rk3576_can + TX queue wedge fix
Rockchip re-added CAN-FD support to the classic-only rk3576_can.c on their
newer vendor branch (post-rkr7.2, see the history of drivers/net/can/rockchip/rk3576_can.c on the release-6.1 branch of https://github.com/flipperdevices/rockchip-linux). This PR backports those
commits as-is, adds a TX queue wedge fix on top, and switches the reComputer
Industrial can1 to the FD-capable variant.
Depends on #603 (stacked): this branch sits on top of #603's branch, so until that PR merges the commit list and Files changed here also include its three board-support commits (board dts, rtc watchdog, HaLow overlay) — that overlap is expected; please review and merge #603 first. Once it merges, this PR's diff automatically reduces to the four CAN-FD commits below.
Commits
net: can: rockchip: support for rk3572 — backport of 94a6ea5f857d
(prerequisite: rk3572 compatible plus the TX REQ write-mask plumbing).
net: can: rockchip: add CAN FD mode support — backport of f0302360664d as-is. FD-capable instances are selected by new
compatibles ("rockchip,rk3576-canfd" and friends); canfd_frame TX/RX
paths, DBTP/TDCR programming, and removal of the TX1_REQ fallback arm in
xmit. (The DMA_PREP_INTERRUPT one-liner in between, 17b529b2add7, is
already in the rkr7.2 base.)
can: rk3576_can: don't clear CAN_CMD from the TX-finish interrupt —
custom fix on top of the backports: the TX-finish handler's
unconditional CAN_CMD = 0 write can land after the just-woken xmit
(running on another CPU) armed its TX0 request, killing that pending
frame and wedging the stopped queue forever. The request bit is
self-clearing, so the explicit clear is simply dropped.
arm64: dts: rockchip: enable CAN-FD on reComputer Industrial can1 —
use "rockchip,rk3576-canfd" for the board's CAN1 (TPT71044 isolated
transceiver).
Boards keeping the old "rockchip,rk3576-can" compatible are unaffected.
Verified: rk3576_can.ko builds with CONFIG_CAN_RK3576=m and the board
DTB contains the FD compatible.
Split out of #603 so the CAN-FD enablement stays independently revertible.

Walkthrough
The driver adds CAN FD variants for RK3572, RK3576, and RV1126B. It configures data-phase timing, transmits and receives FD frames with BRS handling, and selects controller capabilities and receive-record size by variant. It also changes receive quota calculations and error-skb handling. The RK3576 reComputer Industrial DTS selects the CAN-FD-compatible variant for CAN1.
armbian/linux-rockchip#603: This PR changes the CAN1 node added by #603 to select the CAN-FD-compatible variant.

Passive-state reporting sets exactly one of TX_PASSIVE and RX_PASSIVE based on which counter is greater, even when both counters indicate a passive state.
The delivered CAN error frame omits one applicable passive-state direction.
This can occur when: A passive-error interrupt occurs with TX and RX error counters both at or above the passive threshold.
Note: this behaviour predates this PR (already present at merge base 85233a85b679); the change keeps it reachable.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Rounding a FIFO word count up can classify an incomplete entry as a complete frame and call rk3576_can_rx before its remaining words are available.
A partial frame may be delivered with invalid data or consume words belonging to a later frame.
This can occur when: CAN_STR_STATE reports five occupied words while one four-word classic entry is complete and the next entry is being filled.

Unverified finding
We couldn't verify this from the code. It is shown for review, not as a verified issue.
Transmit now always uses TX0 instead of checking the command register and selecting the alternate TX buffer; a still-pending TX0 request may be overwritten.
One frame may be lost or transmitted with the wrong payload, and its echo/completion accounting may diverge.
This can occur when: Bus-off recovery or another queue restart permits a new xmit while the preceding TX0 request remains armed.

Keep the SoM's 12500 fF quartz load on the RTC.
The carrier deletes the quartz-load-femtofarads = <12500> value that the shared SoM sets on pcf85063. The driver then uses its 7000 fF default, so the RTC load changes from 12.5 pF to 7 pF. CLKOUT export does not depend on the load setting, so the deletion is not needed for xin32k. Removing the deletion keeps the SoM value and still exports the clock. If the SoM crystal is specified for 12.5 pF, the 7 pF load can cause inaccurate timekeeping or unreliable oscillation. The sibling boards keep 12500.

Restrict nxp,timer-watchdog to the compatibles whose driver registers the watchdog.
The binding accepts nxp,timer-watchdog and timeout-sec for every compatible in its enum, including nxp,pcf85263 and nxp,pcf85363. The drivers for those two compatibles ignore the property and never register a watchdog. Such a node validates, but no /dev/watchdog device appears. Limit both properties to the compatibles the watchdog driver binds to: nxp,pcf8563, epson,rtc8564, microcrystal,rv8564, and nxp,pca8565.

Set the MTU to CANFD_MTU only when CAN FD mode is enabled.
The FD case sets ndev->mtu = CANFD_MTU at probe. CAN FD mode is off by default, so an FD socket frame can reach rk3576_can_start_xmit. Return a stop error only when the timer is still armed, or restore the armed state.
If the TMRC disable write succeeds and the later ST2 access fails, pcf8563_wdt_stop returns an error while the countdown is already disabled. The watchdog core keeps WDOG_ACTIVE set, so it keeps pinging a timer that cannot expire.

Serialize the ST2 read-modify-write sequences in the PCF8563 driver.
The watchdog path writes PCF8563_BIT_TIE into ST2 without a lock shared with the alarm setter. pcf8563_set_alarm_mode reads ST2, changes AIE, and writes the old TIE value back. When an alarm update reads ST2 before pcf8563_wdt_start writes it and writes after, TIE is cleared. The watchdog stays active, but timer expiry does not assert INT. Hold one driver mutex around each ST2 read-modify-write: pcf8563_set_alarm_mode, pcf8563_wdt_program, and pcf8563_wdt_ping.

Keep the stored watchdog timeout and the timer registers consistent after a failed reprogram.
When pcf8563_wdt_set_timeout() changes an active watchdog from 60 s to 300 s, it stores the new timeout before pcf8563_wdt_program() runs. If the TMR write fails, the chip keeps the 1 Hz source and the old count. The function returns the error and leaves the 300 s timeout stored. A later keepalive from pcf8563_wdt_ping() then writes TMR = 5 at 1 Hz. The watchdog expires about 5 seconds after that keepalive instead of after the configured timeout. The state continues while keepalives run and until the timeout is set again. A transient I2C error during the timeout change can therefore cause a premature expiry and an unexpected reset.
The fix must keep three values consistent after each failing step of pcf8563_wdt_program(): the stored timeout, the TMRC clock selection, and the TMR count. The change must also define how pcf8563_wdt_ping() uses that state.
Restoring the old timeout on error is not safe. If TMRC is already set to 1/60 Hz and the later ST2 write fails, a ping with the restored 60 s value writes TMR = 60 at that clock. That expires after about one hour. Moving the assignment after a successful program has the same problem in that case. Making ping use the programmed clock alone also does not work, because a 1 Hz count cannot represent 300 s. Ping would need to rewrite TMRC.
Add tests for a failed TMR write followed by a keepalive, and for a failed ST2 write after the clock change.

Round the initial timeout-sec value to the achieved hardware timeout.
watchdog_init_timeout() stores a valid timeout-sec unchanged. The driver rounds the timeout up to whole minutes only in .set_timeout. With timeout-sec = <256>, userspace reads 256 s, but .start programs 300 s.

Block RTC alarm enable when nxp,timer-watchdog gives INT to the reset circuit.
With nxp,timer-watchdog set, the PCF8563 INT output drives the system reset circuit. The alarm path still sets AIE, so an expiring alarm asserts INT and can reset the board. Reject alarm enable in pcf8563_irq_enable and pcf8563_rtc_set_alarm when the property is set, or clear RTC_FEATURE_ALARM in pcf8563_probe.

When `nxp,timer-watchdog` is set, prevent RTC alarm enable from asserting the
reset-connected INT output. In `pcf8563_probe`, clear `RTC_FEATURE_ALARM` for
this configuration, or reject enable requests in `pcf8563_irq_enable` and
`pcf8563_rtc_set_alarm`; preserve normal alarm behavior when the property is
absent.

Add CAN FD mode support to the rk3576_can driver. New compatible
strings "rockchip,rk3576-canfd", "rockchip,rk3572-canfd" and
"rockchip,rv1126b-canfd" are introduced, together with matching mode
enumerations, to describe the FD-capable variants of the controllers.
When CAN_CTRLMODE_FD is set, program the data bit timing register
(DBTP) -- including the BRS time segment 1 field and the BRS mode bit
-- and configure the Transmitter Delay Compensation register (TDCR)
when the data bitrate exceeds 2.2 Mbps.
Convert the TX and RX paths to use canfd_frame, honour the FDF and BRS
flags, and switch DLC handling to can_fd_len2dlc()/can_fd_dlc2len().
On receive, allocate an FD skb with alloc_canfd_skb() when the FDF bit
is set, falling back to alloc_can_skb() for classic frames.
Make the error handler robust against failed skb allocation by guarding
cf accesses with likely(skb), and trigger a MODE_RETT transition on the
bus-off recovery interrupt.
The rx-max-data buffer size is now derived from the controller mode
(4 words for classic CAN, 18 words for CAN FD) instead of being parsed
from the "rockchip,rx-max-data" device property.
Remove the redundant assignment of CAN_TX1_REQ in rk3576_can_start_xmit().
The driver already guarantees at least one free TX buffer via the
queue stop/wake mechanism. Adding TX1 is unnecessary and may
cause out-of-order frame transmission.

The TX-finish handler clears CAN_CMD unconditionally before waking the
queue. xmit only ever arms TX0 and the queue is only woken from this
handler, so the woken xmit can run on another CPU while the handler is
still returning: it arms the next frame and sets TX0_REQ, and the
handler's late CAN_CMD write clears that pending request. The frame
never completes, no further TX-finish interrupt fires and the stopped
queue is never woken again.
The request bit is self-clearing once the frame is sent, which is what
makes it usable as the busy indicator, so no explicit clear is needed.
Switch can1 to the CAN-FD capable controller variant ("rockchip,
rk3576-canfd", handled by rk3576_can) now that the driver supports it
again. The TPT71044 isolated transceiver wiring is unchanged.

Keep a classic rockchip,rk3576-can compatible on CAN1.
The board node now sets compatible = "rockchip,rk3576-canfd" alone. That string replaces the classic string that CAN1 inherits from rk3576.dtsi. A DTB built from this tree and booted with the pre-change rk3576_can driver cannot match CAN1, so the interface does not bind. Adding a fallback compatible is the usual way to keep older drivers working, but the match order in the new driver needs checking before adopting it.

Update the CAN1 node under &can1 to retain the classic rockchip,rk3576-can
compatible alongside the CAN-FD compatible, after verifying the new driver’s
match order supports that ordering. Preserve compatibility with the pre-change
rk3576_can driver without changing unrelated CAN nodes.

can: rockchip: backport CAN-FD support for rk3576_can + TX queue wedge fix
Rockchip re-added CAN-FD support to the classic-only
rk3576_can.con theirnewer vendor branch (post-rkr7.2, see the history of
drivers/net/can/rockchip/rk3576_can.con therelease-6.1branch ofhttps://github.com/flipperdevices/rockchip-linux). This PR backports those
commits as-is, adds a TX queue wedge fix on top, and switches the reComputer
Industrial can1 to the FD-capable variant.
Commits
94a6ea5f857d(prerequisite: rk3572 compatible plus the TX REQ write-mask plumbing).
f0302360664das-is. FD-capable instances are selected by newcompatibles ("rockchip,rk3576-canfd" and friends); canfd_frame TX/RX
paths, DBTP/TDCR programming, and removal of the TX1_REQ fallback arm in
xmit. (The
DMA_PREP_INTERRUPTone-liner in between,17b529b2add7, isalready in the rkr7.2 base.)
custom fix on top of the backports: the TX-finish handler's
unconditional
CAN_CMD = 0write can land after the just-woken xmit(running on another CPU) armed its TX0 request, killing that pending
frame and wedging the stopped queue forever. The request bit is
self-clearing, so the explicit clear is simply dropped.
use "rockchip,rk3576-canfd" for the board's CAN1 (TPT71044 isolated
transceiver).
Boards keeping the old "rockchip,rk3576-can" compatible are unaffected.
Verified:
rk3576_can.kobuilds withCONFIG_CAN_RK3576=mand the boardDTB contains the FD compatible.
Split out of #603 so the CAN-FD enablement stays independently revertible.
