PRs from forks get no docs preview, for example #1699. Their token is read-only, so the publish and comment steps are skipped.

  • pr-docs-preview.yml builds the site with a read-only token and uploads it as an artifact.
  • The new pr-docs-preview-publish.yml runs on workflow_run. It publishes the artifact to www and comments once on the PR. It removes the preview when the PR closes.
  • The publish workflow runs no PR code. It checks that the PR number is a number and that the PR head is the built commit.

Tested: the www update step against a local git repository (publish, unchanged publish, remove). The full flow runs only after merge, because workflow_run uses the workflow from main.

A PR from a fork gets a read-only token, so its preview was never
published. Build with the read-only token and upload the site as an
artifact. A workflow_run workflow publishes it to www and comments.

Walkthrough

The PR docs workflow builds previews for open PRs and uploads the site with PR and action metadata. A separate workflow processes successful build runs. It validates the metadata and current PR state, then publishes or removes the preview on the www branch. It retries failed pushes with rebases. For publish actions, it posts a preview link comment only when no marked comment exists.

- Around line 101-103: Update the duplicate-comment check to avoid piping gh api
output directly into grep -q under pipefail, which can cause gh to fail with
SIGPIPE and miss an existing marker. Capture the paginated comment bodies before
checking them with grep, preserving the early exit when the marker is found.
- Around line 17-19: Update the concurrency group in the workflow to key runs by
the pull request’s head repository and branch from the workflow_run event, so
runs for different PR branches do not replace each other. Keep
cancel-in-progress set to false.
- Around line 7-10: Protect the `workflow_run` publishing flow against untrusted
fork content by gating the `Update www branch` step with a protected environment
that requires maintainer approval for fork PRs; also exclude `.git*` files from
the `rsync` copy into the published directory.

Review comments at @.github/workflows/pr-docs-preview.yml:
- Line 57: Update the workflow’s ACTION expression to derive remove versus
publish from the pull request state, and change the build-step guards to run
only when the PR is open. In the publish workflow’s Check preview metadata step,
obtain the PR state alongside head.sha from GitHub and force ACTION to remove
when the PR is not open, rather than trusting the artifact’s state.
