The PNG decode path in libpng_wrapper.cpp sizes its output buffer from the IHDR fields and then lets png_read_image write one png_get_rowbytes() scanline per row into it, but the bit depth and color type that drive that layout come straight from the file and were only checked with asserts, which are compiled out in release builds (RelWithDebInfo defines NDEBUG). A crafted stream whose bit depth is larger than the decoder's element type, for example a 16-bit image handed to the 8-bit decodePNGToImage overload, or whose color type leaves png_channels at zero, therefore makes libpng write past the end of imageData_arg. The width * height * channels product was also formed in 32-bit and could wrap, under-sizing the allocation the same way. This is reachable from untrusted input through decodePNGToImage, the public decode entry that OrganizedPointCloudCompression::decodePointCloud uses on an incoming cloud stream. I ran into it while fuzzing the PNG wrapper under AddressSanitizer, which flagged a heap-buffer-overflow write inside png_combine_row on the bit-depth mismatch. The fix rejects a bit depth or color type that does not match the element layout before anything is allocated, computes the element count in 64-bit, and clears the outputs on the error path, so valid images decode exactly as before. The new PNG tests in test_io.cpp cover the mismatch, which overran the buffer before the change, and an 8-bit RGB round trip.

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Bug Fixes
    • PNG decoding now safely rejects images with unsupported color formats or bit depths, reports an error, and clears the output image and its dimensions instead of relying on a check that may not run in release builds.
    • Updated image sizing calculations to better handle larger image dimensions and channel counts.

Walkthrough

The PNG decoder now rejects unsupported color types and bit depths before allocating output data. It resets output dimensions, channel count, and image data for rejected input. Tests cover mismatch rejection and a matching 8-bit RGB round trip.

Changes: PNG Decode Validation

Layer / File(s) Summary
Validate and size decoded PNG data
io/src/libpng_wrapper.cpp
The decoder replaces the bit-depth assertion with runtime checks for supported color type and matching bit depth. On rejection, it logs an error, resets dimensions and channels, clears the image, and destroys the read structures. Row sizes and offsets now use std::size_t calculations based on width and channel count.
Test PNG decode outcomes
test/io/test_io.cpp
PNG-enabled tests verify that an 8-bit decode rejects 16-bit RGB input and resets the output. A matching 8-bit RGB encode/decode test checks the dimensions, channel count, and pixel data.

Change: Bug fix

Merge Risk: Moderate · up to f7fbb

The PR closes the bit-depth mismatch overflow, but on 32-bit builds a crafted large-dimension PNG can still wrap the buffer size calculation and overrun the decode buffer. Add an overflow check before allocation to finish the hardening before merge.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to f7fbb

The change closes a dangerous format-mismatch write path, but the point-cloud decoder does not handle the new rejection result before consuming its output. A rejected disparity image can therefore lead to invalid memory access instead of a clean failure. Remaining allocation findings predate this PR; the demonstrated exposure is within applications decoding untrusted images or cloud streams.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new cleared-output rejection state is not propagated through point-cloud reconstruction. A stream with a lower-bit-depth disparity PNG can now leave disparityData empty, while decoding continues into conversion using nonzero cloud dimensions. Conversion checks the buffer size only with assertions before indexing it, so release builds can perform invalid memory reads. The prior release path allocated the disparity buffer for this input class; the PR fixes one write hazard but introduces this incompatible failure transition without establishing clean end-to-end rejection.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — A party able to supply PNG bytes directly, or embedded disparity and color payloads in a cloud stream, can influence decoding and subsequent reconstruction within the consuming process. The inspected path supports process-level memory-safety and availability impact; it does not establish a particular network service, tenant boundary, or cross-service propagation.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • observed — The two retained findings concern dimension-driven allocation arithmetic and failure of the row-pointer allocation. Both conditions have antecedents at the PR base: image sizing previously used narrower multiplication, and the unchecked malloc already preceded row-pointer writes. The PR improves arithmetic on wider targets but adds no explicit overflow guard. These findings remain relevant without demonstrating that this PR introduced or widened their attack paths; practical dimension limits and allocation-failure conditions remain platform-dependent.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — A newly rejected 8-bit grayscale disparity payload followed by a valid color payload illustrates the incomplete failure boundary: disparity remains empty, subsequent decoding replaces the shared metadata, and conversion proceeds using cloud dimensions. Assertions can stop this in assertion-enabled builds, but they do not provide a release-build rejection control. This creates a new rejected-to-consumed transition on an already exposed malformed-input path.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The added tests assert that a mismatched decode clears preinitialized outputs and that a matching 8-bit RGB round trip preserves pixels and metadata. They cover the local output transition, not propagation of that transition through point-cloud reconstruction.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Make decode failure explicit and require both decoded images to satisfy the reconstruction dimensions before mutating the output cloud. Treat decoded data and metadata as one validated result so that a later successful decode cannot obscure an earlier failure.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title '[io] validate PNG bit depth and color type before sizing the decode buffer' matches the main change. The raw summary says decodePNGImage now rejects PNGs with an unsupported color type or a mismatched bit depth before allocating the output. The title names the validation, the scope ([io]), and the ordering relative to buffer sizing. The title does not mention the 64-bit element count or the error-path output clearing, but the title does not need to cover every detail.

Prevent element-count overflow before allocation.

On a 32-bit build, a valid PNG with width and height of 65,536 makes png_height * row_elements wrap to zero. png_read_image then writes scanlines through row pointers into an undersized vector.

Check both products before allocation. Reset the outputs and reject the PNG when either product exceeds std::numeric_limits<std::size_t>::max(). The repository includes 32-bit build support, so this path cannot be dismissed as unsupported.

Handle row-pointer allocation failure.

malloc can return nullptr, but this loop indexes row_pointers immediately. A PNG decode under memory pressure then dereferences null and terminates the caller.

Check the allocation result before this loop. On failure, clear the outputs and destroy the libpng structures.
