[zh-CN] “Key” incorrectly translated as “密钥” in storage panels #465
In Simplified Chinese, “Key” is translated as “密钥” in Microsoft Edge DevTools under Application → Local Storage, Session Storage, Extension Storage, and IndexedDB. In this context, “Key” refers to a key in a key-value pair, not a cryptographic key, so it should be translated as “键”, as it is in Chrome.
I've attached screenshots for comparison. Red circles highlight the incorrect translations, while green boxes highlight the correct ones.
In English, “key” can refer to a data key (“键”), a physical keyboard key (“键” or “按键”), or a cryptographic key (“密钥”). Translating a data key as “密钥” is misleading because it implies a cryptographic meaning where none exists.
This mistranslation genuinely confused me for a long time, making me wonder whether encryption was involved, until I realized that “Key” might simply have been mistranslated.
I also noticed that “Session storage” is displayed in English instead of Simplified Chinese, unlike “Local storage”. I believe it used to be translated correctly. I'm using Edge version 155.0.4283.62, and I'm just mentioning this as a minor additional observation.
The “Key” → “密钥” mistranslation, however, has been around for a long time. A similar issue was reported and fixed in Windows Terminal: microsoft/terminal#9328. Hopefully, this reference might be helpful.
I've also noticed inconsistent translations in Windows Settings under Bluetooth & devices → Keyboard → Shortcut and hotkeys, where “Copilot key” is translated as both “Copilot 键” (correct) and “Copilot 密钥” (incorrect). Could you please pass this on to the appropriate team?
